The End of the Summer Season – September 4, 2020

This will be the last blog entry for me this summer of 2020, and what a summer it was!  Definitely not the one we anticipated we would experience when we left last September, but who knew what turmoil a virus could cause throughout the world, this will be the summer we all remember Covid-19 and …

The Kitchen is Done –August 27, 2020

It has been a few months to getting to this point, but I can finally say the Keeper’s House’s Kitchen is done.  I had hoped to have it done in a different color yellow that a volunteer was going to donate, but the weather cancelled this week’s volunteer day.  I finally had to embrace …

A sick puppy and stormy seas – August 24-25, 2020

The notable project completed on Monday was delivering a step to the small shed in the campground, and it is not just any step, it is part of Ma Baker!  Brian has been wanting to use one or two of the granite pieces he found in the Ma Baker debris field but could not figure …

The weekend gave us a little bit of everything! August 20-23, 2020

This weekend was all about the skies and swallows with some new friends thrown into the mix!  As I have done for the past few summers, I spend more time with the camera each day because I want to capture this place and all of its beauty to share but also to allow me in …

Time is Winding Down – August 19, 2020

It seems like we arrived just yesterday to open the island for the season, but it has been over 3 months since we ventured out here on a cold May morning.  The goal for the next 2 weeks is to finish up as many of the projects that we started and to have a smooth …

Another Successful Volunteer Day – August 12, 2020

Volunteer days start early for Brian and me, there is a lot of gathering of equipment and supplies to be ready for when the Naumkeag lands at 8:45am.  This week was all about carts, trailers, and wood!  We knew there was going to be a small amount of wood on the boat as well as …

The Month Is Flying By – August 11, 2020

As we come up to the mid-point of August, reality starts to set in that our stay here on the island is winding down.  I think it hits me the most when the sun starts to set before 8pm!  The sunrise is also a little later which is helping me catch a little extra sleep. …

Dog Days of Summer – August 7-10, 2020

Friday started out with us getting the finishing touches on the island to be ready for our weekend visitors.  Brian took the Beast down to the campground to cut the lawn down there and then followed with the weedwacker around the tower and houses. While he was busy taking care of the lawn, I finished …

Whales, Cats and Carpentry – August 6, 2020

It was another day with 2 minke whales swimming and feeding around the island’s waters.  It is fun when out of nowhere, a whale jumps straight out of the water while you are looking at the window! The feeding must be good because they were between the island, Great Misery and all the way over …

No Volunteers Today – August 5, 2020

Typically, Wednesday would be a volunteer day but because of Tropical Storm Isaias and the forecast, the volunteer day was cancelled.  The unfortunate thing was the weather and seas were perfect for the volunteers to arrive on island, never trust a forecast! Without the extra assistance from the volunteers, Brian and I just needed to …
